Cattle heat-stress risk: read the index with the animal and the farm
A THI classification is a prompt to observe and act within an established protocol. Risk depends on more than a single environmental number.
Why thresholds differ
Studies and extension guidance do not always use the same THI equation, threshold or population. Lactation stage, production, breed, acclimation and climate influence response. For that reason, a threshold must remain tied to its methodology and intended use.
Pair environmental and animal evidence
- Observe respiration, posture, activity, grouping, feed intake and water use according to qualified local guidance.
- Check shade, airflow, stocking, water access and the actual microclimate around animals.
- Consider duration, overnight recovery and repeated hot days.
- Escalate concerning signs through the farm's veterinary and emergency procedures.
